Google has officially announced that the first batch of its Made in India Pixel 8 devices is now rolling off production lines, marking a significant milestone for the tech giant’s operations in the country. In a post shared on the platform X (previously Twitter), Google stated, “Excited to announce that the first of our Made in India Google #Pixel8 devices have started rolling off the production lines. Grateful for the partnership with Hon’ble Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw as we look forward to bringing the #TeamPixel experience to people across India.”
This development aligns with Google’s commitment to expanding its footprint in India, a promise made at the Google for India event last year. The initiative to manufacture Pixel smartphones within India is part of a broader strategy to better meet local demand while also supporting the Indian government’s “Make in India” campaign. This move will make the Pixel 8 the first India-made Pixel phone, with the Pixel A-series expected to follow suit.
Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, highlighted the importance of this production shift last year. “It’s an early step towards expanding our production here to meet the local demand for Pixel devices. And even more importantly, it’s a huge step forward in Google’s commitment to Make in India,” Osterloh said. He further emphasised that India is a priority market for Google, and the company is eager to bring more of its innovative Pixel devices to the region.
As anticipation builds for Google’s annual “Made by Google” event, scheduled for August 13, 2024, this announcement adds an extra layer of excitement for Indian consumers. At the event, Google will launch the Pixel 9 series, alongside other potential hardware like new earbuds and possibly a new smartwatch. While Google’s plans for which devices will make it to the Indian market remain under wraps, the company’s first foldable phone is set to debut in the country soon.
