When searching for a business laptop that balances performance, portability, and durability, the Asus ExpertBook B3 (B3404) offers a compelling option. Being a business laptop, configurability comes naturally to it. You can get this laptop in a whole bunch of options tailor-made for your preference and use case. Not just processor, graphics, and memory, you can also “custom-build” the display, choose from anything and everything from a higher-resolution, brightness, and touchscreen and non-touchscreen.
Of course, this also means, there can’t be a single-set benchmark to review these laptops. Every configuration will offer something useful for the intended customer. As a simpleton watching these laptops from a distance, you might think the entry-level option is a no-go simply because its specs aren’t exciting. But that may be far from the truth.
The same laptop could mean the world for somebody. That doesn’t mean you can’t objectively review these laptops or that all such laptops are built from the same cloth. Just like there could be great business laptops, there could be bad business laptops as well. Difference is, you review them and come to a conclusion from a slightly different lens. Like for example, design may not be a big ask from a business laptop but build quality sure is.
Build and design
The Asus ExpertBook B3 features a well-made case constructed from matte black plastic with smooth surfaces. While the materials may not be premium, the build quality is solid, with a keyboard and lid that exhibit only slight flex. This is not a deal breaker. The hinges are tightly adjusted, allowing for a maximum opening angle of 180 degrees, which adds versatility. Accessing the internal components, including the battery, is straightforward after removing the base plate.
Connectivity
The ExpertBook B3 is equipped with a variety of ports to cater to business needs. It includes two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and two USB-C ports (one Thunderbolt 4, one USB 3.2 Gen 2). Both USB-C ports support Power Delivery, and the Thunderbolt 4 port can also output a DisplayPort signal. This configuration provides two video outputs (HDMI and DisplayPort), although the laptop lacks an SD card reader. The inclusion of a 0.9-megapixel webcam with a mechanical cover is a practical addition, even if the camera itself is fairly standard.
Keyboard and touchpad
The chiclet keyboard features concave keys with one-level backlighting and splash protection. The key resistance could be slightly tighter. The arrow keys and Enter key are somewhat small, which might affect usability for some users. The multi-touch-enabled clickpad is plenty spacious and serves as a reliable mouse replacement with its short lift and clear pressure point.
Display
Asus offers the ExpertBook B3 with a matte 14-inch display in two resolutions: 1920 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA) and 2560 x 1600 pixels (WQXGA). Both versions feature a work-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio and can optionally be selected as touchscreens. The standard display (which we have for review) provides acceptable colour accuracy out of the box, though calibration improves this further. Despite missing its target brightness and contrast values, the display remains usable in typical indoor conditions and moderate outdoor lighting. The higher resolution, 500-nit panel, offers better brightness and colour depiction (DCI-P3).
Performance
The Asus ExpertBook B3 can be configured with a range of Intel processors, including the Core i7-1355U, which boasts 10 cores (2P, 8E) and maximum clock rates of 5 GHz (P) and 3.7 GHz (E). Performance modes include Performance, Standard, and Whisper, with the latter two affecting CPU and GPU performance. The system is designed for office tasks, internet applications, and moderate GPU-heavy programs and games. Benchmarks reveal that the Core i7-1355U maintains consistent performance under continuous load.
Our review unit comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM, ensuring smooth multitasking and good PCMark results. Storage is handled by 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD, which offers excellent transfer rates and quick loading times, with no thermal throttling observed. However, there is no space for an additional SSD.
Thermal management and noise
In everyday use, the laptop’s fan remains inactive or operates quietly. Under load, noise levels can reach up to 49 dB(A), though they are generally lower. Whisper mode reduces noise emissions at the cost of some performance.
Thermal performance is commendable, with surface temperatures remaining within comfortable ranges even under stress. The laptop’s cooling system handles demanding tasks effectively without significant heat buildup.
Battery life
Battery life is a critical factor for mobile professionals, and the ExpertBook B3 performs well in this area. It achieves around 12 hours during our battery life test, making it a reliable companion for a full workday without needing to recharge.
Audio
The stereo speakers deliver decent sound quality, sufficient for video calls, multimedia consumption, and casual listening. While they may not rival dedicated audio systems, they are adequate for typical business use.
Portability
Weighing about 1.52 kg, the ExpertBook B3 is reasonably portable, making it easy to carry around. Its moderate weight, combined with good battery life, ensures that it can support professionals on the go.
Should you buy it?
The Asus ExpertBook B3 (B3404) offers a well-rounded package for business users. Its build quality, while not premium, is solid and practical. Connectivity options are robust. The keyboard and touchpad are functional, though minor improvements could enhance the user experience.
The display, while not the brightest or most colour-accurate, is versatile with touch options and suitable for typical business tasks. Performance-wise, the ExpertBook B3 handles office applications, internet use, and moderate GPU workloads with ease. Thermal management and noise levels are well-controlled, contributing to a comfortable user experience.
Battery life is a standout feature. Combined with its portability, the ExpertBook B3 is a reliable tool for professionals who need a dependable and versatile laptop. Whether you’re a simple observer or a power user, the Asus ExpertBook B3 offers configurations to meet a wide range of needs, making it a compelling choice for those in the market for a business laptop.
