As the Galaxy S24 series goes on sale in India starting from today, 31st January 2024, Samsung has shared more insight into the country’s role in building the line-up’s biggest USP feature— Galaxy AI.
In a press release sent out to the media, coinciding with Samsung Mobile boss TM Roh’s India visit, the company announced that its Noida and Bengaluru R&D centres have made “great contributions” to help provide customers with “practical and useful AI experiences” on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
More specifically, the teams have contributed to “commercialisation of language AI and optimisation of AI for mobile to framework development,” the company added.
SRI-B – short for Samsung R&D Institute Bengaluru — is Samsung’s largest software research and development (R&D) centre outside of Korea. The centre which has been in existence for over 27 years was instrumental in shaping last year’s Galaxy S23 series, particularly the AI aspect, contributing to features like Photo Remaster and Object Eraser as well as the AI-Interactive Contour Segmentation tool that let users draw around an object in a photo to select and convert it to objects and stickers that they could insert in another image.
Outside its own R&D centres, the company has invested in putting up seed labs in multiple universities where engineers can learn how to collect and use data for AI from the ground up and so, it comes as no surprise that the South Korean major has tapped into the country’s potential— yet again— to help design its “AI phones.”
On his latest visit to India, TM Roh also reiterated the company’s commitment to bringing its Galaxy AI suit to as many as 100 million Galaxy devices globally, and not keep it exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series. Moreover, the rollout is expected in this year itself.
“This year, we have changed the industry paradigm by integrating the power of AI with Galaxy S24 series. We believe mobiles will become the primary access point for AI technology as people already use their smartphones for just about everything, making it the perfect vessel,” Roh said in a prepared statement, adding “By using customer insights accumulated over decades, years of innovation to optimise AI for mobiles and open collaboration with industry leaders, we have come up with Galaxy AI, which will become the global standard for mobile AI.”
