Apple WWDC 2024 Live Updates: It’s D-day. At WWDC 2024, in a few hours from now, Apple is poised to unveil its ambitious AI plans for the iPhone, Mac, and a wide range of its devices—its next big thing if you will. Although late to the AI race, Apple’s strategy has always focused on meticulous refinement rather than being the first to market. This approach heightens anticipation for what Apple has been developing behind closed doors.
A cornerstone of Apple’s AI strategy is a reported billion-dollar partnership with OpenAI, aimed at integrating ChatGPT and similar AI capabilities throughout its ecosystem. This includes the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and the Vision Pro. Unlike other brands that have adopted chatbot integrations, Apple is expected to implement these features in a distinctively innovative manner, reflecting internal resistance to conventional chatbot models.
Significantly, Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, is slated for its most substantial upgrade since its introduction with the iPhone 4S in 2011. Leveraging advanced AI and Apple’s precise engineering, this overhaul promises to enhance Siri’s functionality and user experience dramatically. With these developments, Apple is set to redefine its AI landscape, promising groundbreaking advancements across its suite of products.
With AI intelligence, Apple’s next big frontier could be home robotics, per a Bloomberg report. Cupertino may be pursuing this dream after having failed to make the Apple Car. There’s no denying that Apple would be looking for its next big thing once the dust on AI settles. Home robotics is one option. It is largely expected that John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of machine learning, would be the one to spearhead the project. Giannandrea has reportedly resisted the urge to integrate just about any chatbot in Apple devices pushing Apple to do something different with the OpenAI tech, expected to be announced at WWDC 2024. One can expect a similar stance on robotics as well, if at all, Apple starts working on it.

With iOS 18, Apple plans to enhance Siri by enabling it to analyse your iPhone activity and trigger customised functions based on user prompts.
Initially, iOS users will only be able to control features in Apple-made apps, but the company aims to support hundreds of different commands over time, according to a Bloomberg report.
This update promises significant improvements to Siri, including enhanced contextual understanding and broader control over various apps. This development represents a major step forward in making Siri a more powerful and intuitive assistant for iOS users, giving it the long overdue attention it has deserved since debut.

According to reports, Apple isn’t looking to wow iPhone users with shiny features. Rather its AI approach is said to be more practical. Apple Intelligence will initially focus on features like AI-powered summaries and reply suggestions.
Apple will reportedly use an algorithm to determine whether tasks should be processed locally or sent to a cloud server. The company plans to use its M2 chip in data centres, as per a Bloomberg report. Apple will also avoid creating user profiles and will release reports confirming that user data isn’t being sold or accessed.

Reports suggest that Apple Intelligence may have limitations in terms of device compatibility. Speculations indicate that only a select few Apple devices may support the full spectrum of features offered by Apple Intelligence.
Bloomberg reports that Apple Intelligence will require an iPad and Mac equipped with the M1 chip or newer iterations. For iPhone users, compatibility will extend to the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max at a minimum. The upcoming iPhone 16 series should support them, too, though it remains to be seen if Apple will maintain its AI features exclusively for the pro-iPhone models.

Fresh reports coming in suggest that Apple’s iOS 18, the next major iteration of iOS, will allow users to lock individual apps behind biometrics such as Face ID. Certain apps, including third-party, already support it, but the list could become bigger this year. Also, rumour has it that Apple is looking to extend dark mode on to the Home Screen, in iOS 18. iOS 18 is widely being billed as the most ambitious update in iPhone history.

According to reports, Apple is set to unveil its AI system, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” at WWDC 2024. The system will encompass all of Apple’s AI features under one roof with Apple looking to introduce “beta” AI features, as reported by Bloomberg, offering users access to a ChatGPT-like chatbot developed by OpenAI among other things. It would be interesting to see the range of real-time use cases Apple has been secretly working on.

A core aspect of Apple’s AI strategy will revolve around a billion-dollar partnership with OpenAI, aimed at integrating ChatGPT and similar capabilities across its entire ecosystem. This partnership is expected to extend to various Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro.
However, rumours suggest that there is internal resistance within Apple regarding the integration of chatbots into its devices. John Giannandrea, Apple’s machine learning chief, has expressed resistance to incorporating large language model-driven chatbots into Apple products. Giannandrea’s stance stems from his conviction that consumers do not require another AI chatbot. And so, there’s a very high possibility that Apple might be cooking something entirely different, to stand out from the crowd.
