Elon Musk’s X, previously called Twitter, maybe coming to eat Google’s lunch. Rumour mills suggest that a new service, “X conferences”, is in the works that could be an X alternative to Google Meet, Zoom, and others.
The microblogging platform has been on a launch spree, expanding its functionalities beyond just, well, “microblogging.” After taking a leaf out of LinkedIn’s textbook and starting job listings, the platform seems to have set its eyes on facilitating web conferences, similar to Google Meet.
While details on how this new feature, tentatively named Conferences, will differ from Spaces remain undisclosed, it’s speculated to enable users to initiate personal group video and audio calls.
Unlike the public Spaces, where anyone can join as a listener, the upcoming web conference feature aims to offer a more controlled environment, akin to Google Meet, potentially limiting access to authorised participants for a more focused discussion.
In recent months, X has introduced various enhancements, including the option to make direct calls to other X users and community notes, among others. The platform seems keen on diversifying its offerings, as evident in Elon Musk’s announcement regarding the forthcoming X TV app.
X TV is slated to be a comprehensive streaming platform, promising users high-quality content seamlessly accessible across different devices. With cross-device viewing capabilities and the ability to cast smartphones onto televisions, X TV aims to revolutionise the viewing experience.
X CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming venture, highlighting the company’s commitment to bringing engaging, real-time content to smart TVs. She said, “From the small screen to the big screen, X is changing everything. Soon we’ll bring real-time, engaging content to your smart TVs with the X TV App.”
