Apollo Charity vice-chairperson and actor Ram Charan’s wife Upasana Kamineni recently opened up about her husband and his lifestyle preference for when they are travelling abroad. He prefers home-style South Indian meals. This habit is so ingrained in him that it eventually inspired her to launch her own dry home foods brand, Athamma’s Kitchen.

What Upasana said about Ram Charan

In a conversation with Curly Tales, Upasana explained that even while travelling internationally and having meals at some of the world’s most acclaimed restaurants, Ram Charan still insists on having at least one Indian meal in his day. “I started as a convenience because it was my problem. We used to go to the best restaurants in the world and then he would come and say, ‘Okay, now I need Indian food.’ I was like, ‘Where will we find Indian food at 11:30 pm in the night?’ Then we would go searching for Indian food in different countries because one meal of his has to be Indian, and it has to be breakfast or dinner. And not North Indian—his food has to be South Indian, and it has to be home-cooked. And when he is shooting, then it is a must,” she said.

Upasana noted that this habit comes from Ram Charan’s father, veteran star Chiranjeevi, who also prefers home-cooked South Indian dishes when he travels.

Upasana mentioned that the concept for her brand came from Chiranjeevi’s wife, Surekha, who would send along pre-mixes with him during outdoor shoots. “You just add water to it and upma, pongal would be ready,” Upasana recalled. “Now I travel with dry home foods everywhere. So I can just get everything ready in 10 minutes.”

What is Ram Charan’s favourite dish?

She also revealed Ram Charan’s absolute must-have dish is rasam with rice and a masala omelette. “It is healthy too as you get rasam that’s good for health, protein from omlette. He likes it with onions and chillis,” she added.

During the same interview, Upasana also offered a home tour their sprawling Hyderabad residence, a bungalow surrounded by manicured lawns and interiors.

Ram Charan and Upasana’s relationship began during their college years and they got married on December 11, 2011. The couple welcomed their daughter, Klin Kaara Konidela, in 2023.
