Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna opened up about his secret to being fit at 53. Always surrounded by food, ‘How is he so fit?’ is a common question that comes to mind. In a candid conversation on a podcast with Natasha Sharma, the chef opened up about his discipline, hard work, and close attention to his routine which helps him stay consistent.

Vikas Khanna also revealed that he uses his bicycle to commute everywhere in New York City. The Michelin Star chef owns his restaurant, Bungalow NYC, in the American capital which gives a creative spin to how Indian cuisine is perceived. The culinary virtuoso holds his rituals close. Speaking to Sharma he said, “What keeps me skinny is that I am extremely disciplined. It is very hard for people to believe that I count everything I do. It’s because I do one thing at a time. It gives you some liberty to be disciplined. I feel rituals are important to me. Rituals of working out, or it could just be pushups or something. Also, taking care of the diet.”

To kickstart his mornings, Khanna said that he’s “addicted to coffee.” Revealing that he often takes granola, 2 boiled eggs, and a big bowl of nuts for breakfast, he added, “Everything is measured and kept in my fridge. Even if you call me at 5 am, I will have my breakfast and leave home. I don’t leave home without eating.”

Condoning home-cooked meals, he prefers food cooked at home and believes that it is best for the body and mind.

Is breakfast still the most important meal?

There is a long-standing debate about whether breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. While Indian meals are loaded with carbs, as per the latest reports, there are several scientific theories which prove what diet routine best suits you.

Reviewed by Dr Christine Mikstas, a WebMD article revealed that breakfast eaters tend to have a lower BMI, better control of appetite, and are less likely to snack on high-fat, high-sugar foods later in the day. Some researches suggest that the meal helps with improved insulin management and sensitivity.

On the other hand, the breakfast debate also includes Dr Adda Bjarnadottir’s study on skipping breakfast. Based on the Healthline report, eating breakfast does not directly relate to healthy eating and gives a neutral response on the cardinal need to have breakfast.

In fact, skipping breakfast does not lead to weight gain either; some studies from the National Institutes of Health even suggest that skipping breakfast may reduce overall calorie intake by up to 400 calories per day. While the eat/skip dilemma will only be dependent on your individual needs, skipping on nutrition is not advised by experts.
