In recent years, the growing incidences of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) especially among adults has become a cause of concern among health experts. Worldwide, approximately 2%–5% of adults experience attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, as per data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is noteworthy that ADHD can look different in adults than it does in children. Recently, Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt opened up about ADHD diagnosis. The Jigra actor shared how this discovery helped her better understand herself.
“I used to get zoned out from a young age—in classrooms or conversations. Recently, I did a psychological test and found out I’m high on the ADHD spectrum,” Alia said. She added that this diagnosis clarified why she feels most at ease in front of the camera or with her daughter, Raha.
What is ADHD?
ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by ongoing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. While typically diagnosed in childhood, it often persists into adulthood. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children with ADHD may have difficulty focusing, controlling impulsive actions, and managing excessive activity levels. These symptoms can also manifest in adults to varying degrees.

Diagnosing ADHD in Children and Adults
ADHD is diagnosed in children through medical exams, symptom checklists, and history reviews. In adults, diagnosis often involves assessing childhood symptoms, current behaviors, and their impact on daily life. Medical professionals use self-reports, family input, and screen for related conditions like depression or anxiety, which may overlap with ADHD.
