As generative artificial intelligence (AI) takes over personalised health assistance, Stella – a virtual mental health and wellness coach fueled by generative AI. Stella can redefine personalised support. It can offer assistance in over 29 languages and understand more than 40 emotions. With an 90% intent detection rate, Stella is believed to be impactful  backed by five million conversations. In a conversation with FE-TransformX, Shumita Kakkar, COO and founder, United We Care on how Stella is redefining generative AI-based chatbot’s role in personalised support. (Edited Excerpts)

How is Stella any different from a spectrum of personalised chatbot services?

Generative AI is something which t is expected to grow at an exponential rate, especially in the field of mental health care. When talking about mental health care, it is something that is still taboo in our society. Keeping that in mind Stella is created in such a way that it can comfort users to speak up about mental issues that they are going through. Stella is enabled to take self-assessment tests and then deep dive into issues to provide user-based solutions. Stella is trained through a cognitive behavioural module. Apart from this Stella also provides a one-to-one discussion with the users after clinical-based self-assessment.

To what extent is it important to have an empathetic chatbot?

Chatbot services usually aim to mimic human conversation through text or voice interaction, which mostly has a limited set of language or conversions. However, Stella offers more interactive and can provide empathy or human touch-based responses as per a user’s convenience. For example, if you have an alcohol addiction or a drug addiction, you will need to go to a clinic and visit them often and take the required medications. Here comes Stella which helps reduce the burdens on experts.  If it is early stages Stella is trained as per the mental health standards and can help to reduce the issue. It will also provide suggestions for doctors if the issue is too critical.

How generative AI-based chatbots are helping to improve mental health outcomes?

Experts believe that mental health counselling chatbots such as Woebot and Gabby, among others, have proven to reduce symptoms of depression and automate some parts of clinical treatment, showing promising results for the development of AI chatbot counsellors. Modalities of AI mental health care delivery include availability through the Internet, smartphone applications, and digital gaming. Innovations such as chatbots, avatar therapy, and companion bots, among others,  can reduce the stigma associated with sharing symptoms of mental illness with physicians, increasing personal comfort with self-disclosure, cost-effectiveness, and broadening accessibility, among others.

Can generative AI-based chatbots overtake clinical assessments?

Generative AI-based chatbots stand nowhere to in-person expert assessment. However, it can collaborate with clinical experts and create a safe place for people who are going through mental issues. Usually, we see that most patients have a fear of speaking about their mental health, especially in front of strangers. Generative AI-based chatbots such as Stella help to provide a secure and comfort zone for the users. Also, generative-AI-based chatbots are believed to have the potential for antipsychotic medication adherence as well as reducing stress, anxiety, and/or depression symptoms. Moreover, it can provide a basic step and help clinical experts understand their patients more effectively.

Why Stella and how can it be used to provide better mental health care?

Stella has both  ISO  and  Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996(HIPPA) certifications to provide the best security structures, where each user’s sensitive data is kept confidential. This helps to create a safe environment for the users where they can share anything without the fear of data breaches. Furthermore, Stella has the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), which is a self-report personality test that assesses adult psychopathology. It comprehensively evaluates psychopathological syndromes and provides information relevant to clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and screening for psychopathology. Stella is available 24 hours  and provides about 60%-70% accurate results. It has a user-friendly interface, keeping in mind that we also deal with old patients.

Furthermore, the collaboration of Stella and psychologist holds the potential to change the mental health outcomes by providing early identification of issues. This niot only reduces the burden of the psychologist but also quickens the recovering process.
