“Mohammad Nabi belongs to Afghanistan’s illustrious generation of players who played a pivotal role in propelling their team to Test status in 2017. During his tenure as captain, he led Afghanistan in 28 ODIs and 35 T20Is, contributing significantly with 1023 runs and 47 wickets. A historic milestone was achieved under his leadership when Afghanistan secured their first-ever World Cup victory in 2015, defeating Scotland in an ODI. This triumph followed another significant achievement – their first-ever victory against a Test-playing nation, which came against Bangladesh in the 2014 Asia Cup.
Nabi is Afghanistan’s most capped player by a considerable margin and remains highly sought after in the franchise T20 circuit. With a wealth of experience, the 38-year-old is a true all-rounder. In 142 ODIs, he has notched up 3046 runs and taken 150 wickets.
One standout memory is Nabi’s exceptional performance against India in the 2019 World Cup, nearly orchestrating a major upset with his all-round brilliance. He claimed 2 wickets for just 33 runs during a boundary-less spell and then displayed fearless batting, scoring 52 runs off 55 balls. However, despite Nabi’s efforts, India managed to avoid a potential upset thanks to the efforts of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.
On a lighter note, in an interview with a Dehradun FM channel, Nabi humorously highlighted the difference between the Indian version of “”Afghani chicken”” and the authentic Afghani chicken, noting, “”No masalas back home. I don’t like masalas.””
