Akira box office collection: While it was not expected to set any records, yet as everyone knows, pre-release, hope floats, in fact, it even soars. Hope floated for Sonakshi Sinha starrer Akira too as it had a very different script and a very capable leading lady who looked more than convincing in brutalising the corrupt ones in society who have caused so much pain with their criminally rapacious acts. Akira cast: Sonakshi Sinha, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anurag Kashyap, Ankita Karan Patel, Teena Singh, Amit Sadh, Urmila Mahanta and Director A.R. Murugadoss. (Bollywood Hungama)

Akira box office collection: However, hope died quickly. In fact, it died very early in the morning shows as empty seats showed that the mass audience had voted against the movie. With an occupancy rate of just 15%, Akira box office collections added up to just Rs 5.5 crore. Disappointing? That's the least that can be said about it. (Bollywood Hungama)

Akira box office collection: So, at the bottom of the barrel, what is Akira bracketted with? NH10 and Mardaani! Birds of a feather flock together, no? NH10 was all about another female-centric movie that starred Anushka Sharma and here too she takes on criminals and emerges bruised, scarred, but undeterred and triumphant. It was another sterling movie that kept you rivetted to the seats in thrall of the proceedings. But it made very little money. NH 10 Cast: Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam, Darshan Kumar, Ravi Jhankal, Deepti Naval and Director: Navdeep Singh. (Bollywood Hungama)

Akira box office collection: Mardaani movie was all about a female cop who is out catching goons. Rani Mukerjii plays the role of a Mumbai Crime Branch cop who managed to hold the film together and make it believable. It is about underage girls being monstrously exploited and the filmmakers are not shy of showing flesh being bared in a violent manner. It is very voyeuristic, unpleasantly so! Cast: Rani Mukerji, Jisshu Sengupta, Tahir Bhasin and Director: Pradeep Sarkar. (Bollywood Hungama)
Akira box office collection: So, all these movies are women-centric and the theme is, more or less, at least in 2, the same. Girls need rescuing and the ones to come forward are other strong girls. Men are a necessary adjunct, but nothing else – Lesson 101: Males can't be expected to save girls, girls must themselves stand up and be counted. And how well did they do at the box office counters? While NH10 made Rs. 3.35 crore on opening day, Mardaani barely managed to brush past at Rs 3.46 crore. Another lesson to be drawn: Girl-focussed films will get the producers nothing more than single-digit returns on day 1! Kind of humbling, if not humiliating, no? (Bollywood Hungama) -
This includes in-cinema advertising that was Rs 6,300 crore in 2015, a 28% growth over the previous year. (Twitter)
