Weight loss is not possible if you aren’t consistent and disciplined about the food that you eat and how physically active you are. According to a new study, adding an extra cup of unsweetened coffee every day is linked with a reduced risk of gaining weight.

The researchers maintain that the if a person adds sugar to coffee the weight loss effect will not be achieved.

Interestingly, adding “cream or non-dairy coffee whitener” did not have an effect on weight, the scientists maintained.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. During the study, the team collected data from three prospective cohort studies: the Nurses’ Health Study (1986-2010), the Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2015) and the Health Professional Follow-up Study (1991-2014).

According to media reports, the scientists analysed the relationship between coffee consumption and body weight changes during the 4-year increments.

Interestingly, the scientists also analysed both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption and considered whether the drinks were prepared with sugar, non-sweeteners or cream.

The team found that one additional cup of unsweetened coffee per day was associated with a decrease of .12 kilograms or .26 pounds over a four-year period. It is noteworthy that participants who increased their daily intake by one teaspoon of sugar, however, gained .09 kilograms or .20 pounds over that same period.

The researchers also emphasised the importance of discussing any dietary concerns or weight loss efforts with an expert.

The findings of the study were published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
