After Spotify introduced its AI playlists enabling users to generate a playlist based on written prompts, Amazon seems to bring  Maestro, an AI playlist generator. Experts believe this might be  tug of war between AI driven playlists, as both of them highlights their expertise.

The news comes as Amazon Music announces its plan to test Maestro, an AI playlist generator. It is believed that Maestro will allow US customers using both iOS and Android to create playlists using spoken or written prompts.

Spotify explained that their prompts can include all sorts of things, such as places, animals, activities, movie characters and colours, among others. On the other hand Amazon highlights that Maestro can suggest a playlist based on emojis. Additionally, users can also write prompts that include activities, sounds or emotions.

From what it is understood, the tug of war stands between Spotify’s AI generator tests in the UK and Australia compared to Amazon launching a ‘subset’ of free Amazon Music users, as well as prime customers and unlimited Amazon Music subscribers, on iOS and Android in the US.

And the winner is..

Maestro subscribers are expected to gain access to more functionality, however Spotify’s AI playlist tool is expected to stand as a double-edged sword. Critics argue that Maestro is launching in beta, so Amazon warns that the technology behind Maestro “won’t always get it right the first time.”

For instance, Maestro users can listen to playlists instantly and save them for later, but Amzon prime members and ad-supported users will only be able to listen to 30-second previews of the songs before saving them. This might push more users to use paid subscription if they like the AI functionality. However, this might also result in reducing users flocking towards free music platforms. Who doesn’t want a free playlist!

As Spotify’s AI playlist tool can allow users with options to find music that suits their own preferences and moods, depending too much on AI to create playlists can lessen the human touch and curation knowledge that distinguishes well-curated playlists. Moreover, the conundrum continues that whether too much of AI might dilute the music discovery experience.
