Reliance Jio has quietly reintroduced its Rs 999 prepaid plan, following a recent tariff hike that had increased its price to Rs 1,199 on July 3, 2024. This revised plan offers a unique blend of features and benefits.

The most notable change in the new Rs 999 plan is its extended validity, which now spans 98 days, up from the previous 84 days. This extension provides users with 14 additional days of service. However, this increase in validity comes at a cost: the total data allocation has been reduced. The plan now offers 2GB of data per day, totaling 192GB over the entire validity period, compared to the previous 3GB per day, which amounted to 252GB.

Despite this reduction in daily data, the Rs 999 plan includes the perk of unlimited 5G data. For customers in areas with Jio’s True 5G service and who own 5G-compatible devices, this plan allows access to unlimited 5G data. Jio has branded this offering as the “Hero 5G” plan, a title it shares only with the Rs 349 plan, which serves as the entry-level option for unlimited 5G access.

Additionally, the plan maintains its offer of 100 SMS per day and unlimited voice calling, ensuring comprehensive connectivity for users.

In contrast, rival telecom operator Airtel offers a competing Rs 979 plan. This plan has a validity of 84 days and includes 2GB of data per day, unlimited voice calling, and 100 SMS per day. Airtel’s plan also provides access to unlimited 5G data. An added advantage of the Airtel plan is the inclusion of a free Amazon Prime membership for 56 days, adding extra value for subscribers.

The reintroduction of Jio’s Rs 999 plan appears to be a strategic move to cater to users seeking a balance between extended validity and unlimited 5G access, despite the reduced daily data limit. As competition in the telecom sector intensifies, both Jio and Airtel are continually refining their offerings to attract and retain customers.
