The Xiaomi 14 series will have to wait as Xiaomi just confirmed that it will launch another smartphone, the Redmi A3, in India days before its big MWC 2024 event in Barcelona. While the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 smartphones is pegged for February 25, it will launch the relatively entry-level Redmi A3 in India on February 14. The smartphone’s design and key hardware specs have been teased ahead of launch.

For those unaware, the Redmi A-series is Xiaomi’s entry-level line designed for first-time smartphone users who may be looking to switch from a feature phone. They’re priced below Rs 10,000 and run Android Go edition software. There’s a good chance the Redmi A3 will be 4G-only going by the price bracket that these phones operate in. It will be a follow-up to last year’s Redmi A2 which was launched in May 2023. Xiaomi usually has a plus model also of these devices but it isn’t immediately clear if the Redmi A3 will have a Redmi A3 Plus variant as well.

Redmi A3 launch: design, specs

Xiaomi is teasing an all-new halo design for the upcoming Redmi A3. It was about time because the A2 and A1 basically had the same design. The new phone bags a circular camera housing, the kind we see in Xiaomi’s more premium ultra phones (FYI: the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is launching on February 25 at MWC, though its India launch remains unclear). Anyhow, green seems to be the hero colour and Xiaomi is sticking to using plush fake leather material on the Redmi A3, like the A2.

Specs that Xiaomi is confirming for now include a “butter-smooth” 90Hz display (possibly with a water drop notch), up to 6GB of onboard RAM (plus 6GB virtual capacity), and a 5,000mAh battery with USB Type-C charging. All of this will be an upgrade over the previous phone.

The Redmi A2 has a 6.52-inch 720p display with 60Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it has the MediaTek Helio G36 processor paired with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage. This is expandable. Running the show is Android 13 Go software. For photography, it has a dual camera setup with an 8MP main sensor on the rear and another 5MP camera on the front for selfies. Rounding off the package is a 5,000mAh battery with 10W micro-USB charging support.
