A Weibo user known as Digital Chat Station has claimed that Apple is currently experimenting with a 200-megapixel camera sensor, which may find its way into a future iPhone model. While the post doesn’t reveal further specifics about the sensor or its technical features, it’s likely that Apple is planning to integrate this high-resolution sensor as the primary camera on the back of the device.
So far, there hasn’t been any concrete indication that a 200MP sensor is being developed specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro. However, speculation suggests that this major camera upgrade could potentially debut with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, which is expected to be released in 2026.
Meanwhile, Samsung has been ahead in the high-resolution camera game, offering 200MP sensors in its smartphones for over two years. The Galaxy S25 Edge is the latest in its series to feature this powerful camera setup.
As for the iPhone 17 series—which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—Apple is reportedly making notable strides in camera technology. The front camera on all models is said to be getting a significant boost, with the resolution jumping from 12MP to 24MP. Improvements to the rear cameras are also expected across the lineup.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to include a 48MP tetraprism telephoto lens, allowing for more advanced optical zoom. The iPhone 17 Air, in contrast, is anticipated to come with a single 48MP wide-angle lens, similar to what’s currently seen on the iPhone 16e.
