Meet Sachin Katti: IIT Bombay alumnus who left Intel as AI chief after 6 months to join OpenAI

While the IT industry is laying off employees left, right and center, the AI industry is on a hiring spree. To elaborate, several big tech companies like Meta, Google, Apple and AI startups like OpenAI, Perplexity are hiring AI skilled talent. One such big profile hiring has just been made by OpenAI who have signed Sachin Katti. Sachin Katti was previously working with Intel as their Chief Technology and AI officer.

OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman announced Katti’s joining on X. “Incredibly excited to work with him on designing and building our compute infrastructure, which will power our AGI research and scale its applications to benefit everyone,” Brockman wrote in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

What is Sachin Katti’s experience?

Sachin Katti started his career as a research assistant at MIT. He then went on to pursue his post-doctoral fellowship at the UC Berkeley. Post these stints Sachin worked at various organisations including being the Founder of Uhana and Director of the RAN Forum and technical Steering Board Co-Chair at the O-RAN Alliance.  Then in 2011 Sachin joined Kumu Networks as their CEO-co-founder. However 10 years down the line came Intel where he worked for four years as the Chief Technology and AI officer before eventually joining OpenAI.

What are Sachin Katti’s Educational qualifications?

Sachin Katti is an alumni of the prestigious IIT Bombay from where he complained his Bachelor’s in Engineering. After which he went to do a PhD spending nearly 15 years at Stanford University as a professor and researcher specialising in computer networking, wireless communications, and AI-driven systems. Additionally during his academic days Sachin Katti published various well-cited research and co-founded several start-ups.

What is Sachin Katti’s job Profile at OpenAI?

At OpenAI Sachin Katti’s new position will be related to the companies goal of building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He will lead compute infrastructure efforts for OpenAI. Moreover since  the hardware and compute layer has increasingly become a strategic bottleneck for frontier AI labs, which rely on massive GPU clusters, custom silicon, and data-centre-scale innovation to train increasingly powerful models.

Therefore at OpenAI, Katti will design systems that power AGI research and scale real-world applications. With OpenAI emerging as one of the largest customers for cutting-edge AI chips globally, his role is expected to influence not just internal compute architecture but also potentially the broader market for AI-related hardware and cloud infrastructure.
