Instagram is rolling out a new feature called Recommendations Reset, designed to give users – including teens – a fresh start with the content they see across the platform’s Explore, Reels, and Feed sections.
The new feature offers a simple, user-friendly way to clear your content recommendations with just a few taps, Meta explains. Once activated, Instagram will reset the posts and accounts suggested to users, giving them the chance to redefine what content they want to see. Over time, Instagram will repersonalise recommendations based on the accounts and types of posts the user interacts with most.
The Recommendations Reset builds on a variety of existing tools Instagram already offers for content curation. Users can mark posts as “Interested” or “Not Interested” to refine recommendations on their Explore page, or even use the “Hidden Words” feature to filter out content with unwanted keywords.
Instagram also recently introduced a new way for teens in countries like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to select topics they want to see more of, including subjects like books, travel, cooking, and sports.
A major focus of the update is ensuring that teens have a safe, positive, and age-appropriate experience on Instagram. The platform offers built-in protections to shield younger users from sensitive or inappropriate content. If any content breaks Instagram’s rules, it is removed. For sensitive content that doesn’t break the rules but may not be suitable for teens, Instagram will either hide it or avoid recommending it altogether.
Additionally, Instagram has strengthened parental controls, and a new Transparency Center page offers more details about how the platform ensures age-appropriate content for younger users.
Beyond content recommendations, Instagram provides several other features for teens to customise their experience. Following Feed allows users to view posts from accounts they follow in chronological order, while Favorites lets teens prioritise content from selected accounts. Instagram’s Close Friends feature also gives teens greater control over who sees their Stories, enhancing privacy.
The Recommendations Reset feature is expected to be available globally in the coming months, providing users everywhere with a valuable tool to better manage the content they see on Instagram.
