Google Photos is getting a massive AI overhaul. As part of a bunch of updates ahead of the festive season, Google is giving it viral artificial intelligence capabilities, including the viral Nano Banana model, directly into the app. This update is designed to make photo editing and searching simpler than ever, utilising conversational commands rather than complex menus and weird navigation.
As part of the new AI update, users are about to gain access to six new features that fundamentally change how they interact with their photos and videos.
6 AI tools coming to Google Photos with the latest update
These six new tools are being rolled out globally across Android and iOS platforms.
Nano Banana integration:
The popular generative AI image model, Nano Banana, is now baked into the Google Photos editor. Users can simply tap “Help me edit” and use natural language to describe any desired edit – from altering the lighting and style to swapping out backgrounds.
AI templates for instant creation:
A new “Create with AI” section offers ready-made, high-concept templates. Powered by Nano Banana, these templates instantly reimagine photos using popular styles, such as turning a picture into a “professional headshot,” or placing the subject into a “high-fashion photoshoot” without the user typing a single line of complex text.
AI flaw correction:
The AI can now perform minor, specific corrections based on simple commands. This feature allows users to easily fix common photographic mishaps by asking the app with simple commands like “Remove Riley’s sunglasses,” “Open my eyes,” or “Make Engel smile,” correcting closed eyes, forgotten accessories, or a lack of expression.
Ask Photos:
Solving the age-old problem of locating specific images, Ask Photos allows users to use complex, natural language searches across their entire library. The feature is rolling out in over 100 countries and 17 new languages, enabling users to find photos by context, such as “Show me all pictures of my cat wearing a Christmas hat from 2022.”
New “Ask” button:
To facilitate this conversational interaction, a dedicated “Ask” button has been introduced. This is the central hub for users to initiate a chat with the AI about the content of their images, request edits, or ask the system to surface related moments from their collection.
Natural language editing on iOS:
iPhone and iPad users in the US are receiving the ability to issue text or voice prompts to describe the edits they want. This capability is paired with a redesigned iOS editor that integrates gesture-based commands and intelligent, one-tap suggestions for a smoother workflow.
