At this year’s Google I/O, the tech giant unveiled a new AI-fuelled theft detection lock aimed at safeguarding users’ devices and data in the event of theft. Drawing inspiration from user feedback, particularly from Brazil where cellphone theft rates are alarming, Google is rolling out anti-theft measures to combat the rising concern.

Brazilian users will be the first to test these anti-theft features, which include a theft detection lock, offline device lock, and remote lock. Google informed that approximately 2 cell phones are stolen every minute in Brazil which makes these anti-theft measures palpable in the country.

Snatch alert with Theft Detection Block

Google’s Theft Detection Block uses advanced AI to detect sudden movements that suggest someone has snatched your phone. Whether they’re running, cycling, or making a speedy getaway in a car, if the motion seems suspicious, your phone’s screen locks instantly. This quick response helps thwart thieves’ attempts to access your data.

Quick and easy Remote Lock

With the new Remote Lock feature, you can secure your lost or stolen phone without the hassle of remembering complex passwords. Instead of fumbling for your Google account details, simply use another device and your phone number to lock your screen remotely. This saves you time and grants you access to additional useful options, like wiping your device clean if required.

Stay locked, stay safe with Offline Device Lock

If a thief tries to disconnect your phone from the network for an extended period, the Offline Device Lock feature will automatically lock your screen to safeguard your data, regardless of whether your device is connected to the internet. Android also watches for other signs of potential theft, such as repeated failed attempts to unlock your device, and takes action to keep your information secure.
