Google has enhanced its Chrome browser for Android with the recent release of version 130, introducing a significant update to the “Listen to this page” feature. Initially announced last month as part of the latest Android features, this update allows users to enjoy uninterrupted audio playback even when switching to other apps on their devices.

The text-to-speech capability for Chrome began rolling out in June, but users encountered limitations that paused audio when closing the browser. The feature was only able to continue playing if the browser remained active in the foreground when the device was locked. This week’s update changes that, allowing audio playback to persist seamlessly as users navigate to different applications.

With the Chrome 130 update, the media player now appears in the notifications area, displaying the article title and website. Users can control playback with handy features including 10-second rewind and skip options, along with a scrubber timeline for more precise navigation through audio content. This enhancement aligns Chrome’s capabilities with those of Google’s Reading mode app, offering a more flexible solution for users who prefer audio without the need for a simplified reading view.

In addition to background playback, the updated “Listen to this page” feature offers multiple customisation options. Users can adjust playback speed, ranging from 0.5x to 4x, and choose from ten different voice options. An added feature enables “Highlight text & auto scroll,” providing a more engaging listening experience. These controls are easily accessible by tapping the docked miniplayer at the bottom of the Chrome interface.

For frequent users of the “Listen to this page” feature, Chrome 130 also allows for quicker access by enabling a play button to appear between the address bar and tab switcher. This adjustment eliminates the need to navigate through the three-dot overflow menu, streamlining the user experience. To set this up, users can go to Chrome Settings and select the Toolbar shortcut option. The rollout of Chrome 130 for Android is currently happening widely.
