After Perplexity’s renewed interest in India, Sam Altman’s OpenAI now wants to have an increased presence in the country. In a bid to expand its market share and open up new opportunities in an ever-expanding market that is India, the company’s CEO Sam Altman has declared opening an office in India to accelerate its expansion. The move pins India’s position as a crucial hub for the company, which has identified India as ChatGPT’s second-largest market globally.

The new office, which is slated to become operational by the end of 2025 in New Delhi, promises to deepen OpenAI’s commitment to the country’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. At a time when most of its rivals, like Google and Perplexity, are committing to have a solid presence in the world’s fastest-growing economy, OpenAI’s local presence could give it an edge in creating new partnerships and solidifying ChatGPT as the top choice for all AI needs.

OpenAI opens up hiring for India

In a bid to speed up the process, OpenAI is already looking for three key people in the market. These hirings include key sales leadership positions:

– Account Director for Digital Natives

–  Account Director for Large Enterprise

–  Account Director for Strategics.

In a nutshell, these roles are designed to manage client relationships and drive the adoption of OpenAI’s products across various sectors. The Digital Natives role will focus on tech-forward clients whereas the role focusing on Large Enterprise will handle major business accounts. The Strategics position will manage complex, large-scale AI deployments.

Sam Altman reveals India’s role in ChatGPT growth

“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India and with India,” said Sam Altman in a statement via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch–chatgpt users grew 4x in the past year–and we are excited to invest much more in India!” he added.

Altman has been vocal about India’s role in the company’s future, hailing it as the second largest market for the brand. In a recent podcast, he revealed that the development of ChatGPT’s latest model, GPT-5, incorporated feedback directly from Indian users.

As if that was enough, OpenAI introduced a new affordable subscription tier specifically for the country. Called ChatGPT Go, which is priced at Rs 399 per month, this tier aims to make the premium version of ChatGPT more accessible and encourage more free users to jump on the train. The move is seen as a result of a previous meeting between Altman and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, where they discussed creating a low-cost AI ecosystem.
