Apple is reportedly planning to venture into the realm of custom battery development, aiming to power future products with significantly improved performance. According to a report by Korean publication ET News, the Cupertino giant is developing its in-house custom batteries and plans to launch them in 2025 in its devices including the iPhone 17.

Apple currently uses rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. While widely used, these batteries face limitations in terms of energy density, performance, and environmental impact. Apple’s custom batteries could address these shortcomings, offering a significant boost in device performance and longevity.

According to the ET News report, Apple is directly involved in creating better materials for the battery, including the anode and cathode, and are exploring the use of carbon nanotubes to enhance performance. It is reportedly considering using a new composition for the cathode material along with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a conductive material performance. CNTs can produce excellent performance even in smaller amounts than existing conductive materials.

Apple is also working on increasing the silicon content in the anode material to improve battery capacity and charging speed. It currently uses Graphite and replacing it with silicon could increase the battery capacity and charging speed of the battery. Overall, Apple’s goal is to create a groundbreaking battery as the demand for high-performance batteries increases with the expansion of mobile user experiences like the Metaverse and Mixed Reality.

Apple’s foray into custom battery manufacturing marks a strategic shift away from relying solely on external suppliers. This move aligns with the company’s efforts to achieve greater control over its components. The company has been developing its own hardware and software components since a long time and now it plans to take this self-reliance one step ahead. Apart from the custom chips and batteries, there are also words that company could make its own display panels for iWatches and iPhones in the coming years.
