With Donald Trump re-elected as President of the United States, JD Vance has made history as one of the youngest Vice Presidents, assuming office at the age of 40. He and his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, attended the inauguration ceremony on January 21.
Vice President Vance shares a unique connection to India through his wife, Usha, whose parents emigrated from Andhra Pradesh to the United States around 1980. Economist Shruti Rajagopalan of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University wrote about Usha’s family background in an article on Substack. Usha studied history at Yale University before earning an MPhil from the University of Cambridge on a Gates Fellowship. According to The New York Times, during her time there, she moved in “mostly liberal and left-wing circles.” However, she has remained largely private about her political views in recent years, aside from supporting her husband.
From 2010 to 2013, Usha attended Yale Law School, where she met JD Vance.
JD Vance’s Family
The Vance family includes three children: sons Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel.
After Vance was selected as Donald Trump’s running mate, Usha’s Hindu heritage became a topic of public interest. Vance has mentioned on several occasions that although his wife is not Christian, she has been “very supportive” of his deepening faith.
In discussing the challenges of their interfaith marriage, Usha remarked, “There are a lot of things we just agree on, especially when it comes to family life and raising our kids. So, the key really is that we just communicate a lot.”
JD Vance’s Salary as U.S. Vice President
As Vice President of the United States, JD Vance will receive an annual salary of $235,100, according to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF). Previously, as a U.S. Senator from Cincinnati, Vance earned $174,000 per year. His vice-presidential salary represents a 35% increase from his senator’s pay.
JD Vance’s Net Worth
According to Forbes, JD Vance’s net worth is estimated at $10 million, a result of his entrepreneurial efforts, various ventures, and his bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. The memoir, which has sold nearly 2 million copies, has been a major source of income for Vance, earning him substantial royalties.
