Who is Maa Mahagauri?
Maa Mahagauri, whose name translates to “fair and radiant,” is revered for her purity, peace, and divine grace. According to ancient mythology, Goddess Parvati performed extreme penance to win Lord Shiva’s love. While Lord Shiva was moved by her devotion and accepted her, the penance turned her complexion dark. To regain her fair complexion, Goddess Parvati sought help from Lord Brahma, who instructed her to defeat the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha and bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges in the Himalayas. After the holy bath, she emerged as the resplendent Maa Mahagauri.
Depicted as a goddess with four arms, riding a bull and adorned in white clothes and ornaments, Maa Mahagauri is a symbol of purity. She also governs the planet Rahu, offering devotees her divine protection.
The Significance of Navratri Day 8
Ashtami, the eighth day of Navratri, is considered the most auspicious day to worship Maa Mahagauri. Her blessings are sought by devotees for peace, purity, and prosperity. All nine forms of Maa Durga are honoured on this sacred day, making it a time of deep devotion and spiritual reflection.

The rituals for Ashtami begin with devotees rising early and purifying themselves with a holy bath. The idol or picture of Maa Mahagauri is placed on the altar, and offerings such as fruits, flowers, sweets, and water are made to the goddess. A heartfelt aarti is performed, and prasad is distributed to family and friends as a gesture of devotion and sharing.

According to the Drik Panchang, the Ashtami tithi will begin at 12:31 PM on October 10 and will continue until 12:06 PM on October 11, making this the ideal time to offer prayers and seek the blessings of Maa Mahagauri.
