Satya Nadella is one of the most successful Indians. He has proved his mettle as the Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, a leading multinational technology corporation. He has spearheaded Microsoft and channeled it into new cloud computing and augmented reality areas, thereby gatekeeping it from failing mobile strategy. Anupama Nadella, his wife has been his rock on his journey throughout, supporting him from the shadows.

About Anupama Nadella

Anupama Nadella is a Delhi-born, who completed her education in Hyderabad and then studied architecture at Manipal University. Her father was an IAS officer, who has worked closely with the government and was the batchmate of Satya’s father. The couple knew each other from their college days as Anupama was Satya’s junior. The duo tied the knot in 1992 and gave birth to three kids. Being the mother of a child with special abilities, she decided to be a homemaker and look after the needs of her children.

Anupama’s journey as Zain’s mother

Anupama and Satya faced a series of ups and downs in their professional as well as their personal lives. When she was 25, and he was 29, they were living in Seattle. The couple was expecting their first child and planning for their future post-delivery. But life had different plans for the couple as they faced some major complications. In a LinkedIn post, Satya Nadella while talking about this difficult phase in their life, wrote how the birth of their first child, Zain was a difficult case. Talking about his newborn, he quoted from his book, Hit Refresh and said, “Over the course of the next couple of years we learned more about the damage caused by in utero asphyxiation, and how Zain would require a wheelchair and be reliant on us because of severe cerebral palsy. I was devastated. But mostly I was sad for how things turned out for me and Anu.”

Satya credited Anupama for her immense emotional capacity to deal with the situation and how she has been extremely supportive and brought the family together and sacrificed her work plans to take care and bring up the child. The couple gave birth to two children after that.

Anupama has time and again opened up about motherhood and how life has changed for her when she became the mother of a child with special abilities. According to her, this entire journey has taught her to be kind, and how being kind to others can teach us to be kind to ourselves. In a piece in Good Housekeeping, Anupama opened up about her motherhood, and how it was at times emotionally draining for her to be dealing with people and their opinions and she said, “Having a newborn is hard; it’s a long, 24-hour day. When the baby is fragile and has medical needs, it stretches out even more. Questions such as Did I do something to cause this? and Am I doing enough? creep up. These doubts make you judge yourself harshly and feel judged.”

“I recognized that most people have something stressful in their lives and that as a result, there is an inherent understanding and empathy out there. This I decided to focus on. When my child had a meltdown in a grocery store, I forced myself to respond to the man offering to unload my cart rather than the cashier rolling her eyes,” she said in an exclusive with Good Housekeeping. However, the couple lost Zain, when he was 26 years old in 2022, due to cerebral palsy.
