This lunar eclipse will be visible across Asia, Western Australia, and parts of eastern Africa, covering nearly 85% of the world’s population, a rarity for galactic events. In India, cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad will also have a clear view of the Chandra Grahan. This is the last lunar eclipse visible in India for 2025. Sky watchers can catch the next one in March 2026. In fact, temples in Varanasi and Ayodhya are likely to close for bhog and aarti.
Additionally, from skyscraper roofs to skylines, Singapore to London, enthusiasts are gearing up to view the blood moon tonight. The red glow is likely to kick in at 11:00 PM IST, and once it does, the moon is going to appear nearly 14% larger and 30% brighter.
What is a Blood Moon lunar eclipse?
Commonly called the Blood Moon due to its red appearance, it’s not as scary as it seems! Attributed to the Rayleigh scattering, it is the result of sunlight travelling through Earth’s atmosphere. Shorter wavelengths like blue and violet, scatter in all directions. However, longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, pass through more directly. This filtered light is what illuminates the Moon during the total eclipse, making it appear red, orange, or even copper-coloured.
