Headaches are common, and migraine is a common cause. Dr Shailesh Jha , senior consultant , Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, says migraines can affect individuals of any age, but they often first manifest in adolescence or early adulthood. The prevalence of migraines tends to peak between the ages of 35 and 45, with many individuals experiencing their first migraine during their teens or 20s. However, migraines can persist throughout a person’s life, and some individuals may continue to experience them into their senior years.

While both men and women can suffer from migraines, there is a notable gender difference in prevalence. Women are more likely to experience migraines than men, and hormonal factors, such as fluctuations in estrogen levels, are believed to contribute to this discrepancy. Additionally, there are certain risk factors and genetic predispositions that may make some individuals more susceptible to migraines. Family history plays a significant role, and individuals with a family history of migraines are more likely to experience them themselves.

What are the external factors triggering migraines?

External factors can vary widely among individuals, but certain common triggers are recognised. Changes in the environment, such as exposure to bright lights, loud noises or strong odours, can act as external stimuli that initiate migraines in susceptible individuals. Weather changes, particularly shifts in barometric pressure, extreme temperatures, or high humidity, are also known to trigger migraines in some people. Additionally, certain foods and beverages have been identified as potential triggers, including aged cheeses, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and artificial sweeteners. Lack of sleep, irregular sleep patterns and excessive stress or emotional factors can contribute to the onset of migraines as well. It is essential for those who experience migraines to identify and manage their specific triggers, as this knowledge can aid in preventive measures and lifestyle adjustments to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Does any food like curry leaves provide any relief?

Curry leaves are commonly used in traditional medicine, and they contain various compounds with potential health benefits. Some proponents suggest that the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties found in curry leaves may contribute to reducing migraine symptoms. However, scientific evidence supporting the direct effectiveness of curry leaves in alleviating migraines is limited.

Should one take coffee in a migraine?

The relationship between coffee and migraines is complex, as caffeine can both trigger and alleviate migraines depending on the individual and circumstances. Caffeine is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter headache medications because it can help constrict blood vessels and reduce pain. For some individuals, consuming a small amount of caffeine during the early stages of a migraine may provide relief. However, excessive or regular caffeine intake can lead to rebound headaches and dependency, potentially worsening migraine symptoms in the long run.

Are there any OTC painkillers?

Yes, there are OTC painkillers that are commonly used to alleviate migraine symptoms for some individuals. Non-prescription medications that may be effective for treating migraines include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is another OTC option that can be used for mild to moderate migraine relief. While OTC painkillers can provide relief for some individuals, they may not be effective for everyone, and excessive or frequent use of these medications can lead to medication-overuse headaches.
