Tata Motors announced that it has received an additional order for 148 electric buses from Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). TML Smart City Mobility, Tata Motors’ subsidiary, will be handling the supply, operation and maintenance of the 12-metre low-floor Tata Starbus EV electric buses for a period of 12-years. This follows a previous order of 921 buses, most of which are already delivered and running with over 95% uptime by BMTC.
The Tata Starbus EV are zero-emission buses built on next-gen architecture with advanced battery systems, ensuring safe and convenient travel across Bengaluru. These buses feature a superior design and top-notch features for a sustainable, comfortable commute.
Commenting on the announcement, Ramachandran R., IAS, MD, BMTC, said, “We are happy to further strengthen our partnership with Tata Motors with these additional 148 electric buses for our fleet modernisation. The performance of the existing Tata electric buses has been exceptional, aligning perfectly with our commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation. The larger e-bus fleet will significantly enhance our capacity to provide eco-friendly, comfortable and reliable services to the citizens of Bengaluru.”

Tata Motors: Previous orders
Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC)
Tata Motors won three orders from UPSRTC, beginning with the recent order in the month of December, of 1,297 units of bus chassis, totalling over 3,500 units. This order was followed by the order of 1,350 units of Tata LPO 1618 bus chassis in December 2023 and 1,000 units in October 2024, through the same e-bidding process, and is helping in improving India’s public transport system, linking urban and rural areas and ensuring smooth mobility for millions of people.
Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC)
This being the latest order, the last order was of 921 buses by BMTC in the month of August this year.
Tata Motors’ e-buses in Bengaluru have now covered over 2.5 crore kilometers, reducing tailpipe emissions by around 14,000 tons of CO2. This success highlights the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhancing urban life with advanced mobility solutions.
