Where does India stand in terms of AI governance?

Conversations around artificial intelligence (AI) on LinkedIn shot up by 70% between December 2022 and September 2023, highlighting the growing prevalence of AI in the workplace. Demand for AI talent is also on the rise, with AI-related job postings across seven major economies – Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, India, United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US) – witnessing a 12% surge during the period, a report released by the professional networking giant showed.

According to data from the LinkedIn Economic Graph Research Institute, which has 1 billion professionals and 67 million companies on its platform – applications for AI and AI-related job postings have seen similar growth, up 11% globally between the December 2022-September 2023 period.

In India, AI-related job views and applications rose by 6% and 5%, respectively, with highest interest coming in for professional services, followed by technology information and media, financial services, administrative and support services, and manufacturing.

The report said that over half (55%) of LinkedIn members worldwide are likely to experience job disruption or augmentation due to AI. This disruption is particularly evident in professional services, finance and manufacturing, where a high demand for AI skills and AI literacy is driving the need for a reskilled workforce.

It also said that professionals with bachelor’s and graduate degrees are more likely to face job disruption compared with those with high school diplomas and associate degrees.

Gen Z professionals are more susceptible to AI-related job disruptions, while women are more likely to experience job disruption or augmentation due to their over-representation in occupations heavily reliant on skills replicable by AI, it added.

Professional services, finance and manufacturing are the three sectors most likely to experience job disruption or augmentation due to AI with over half of the jobs in these sectors expected to be impacted. This is due to the high concentration of routine and repetitive tasks in these sectors, easily automatable by AI, the report added.
