Vivo astounded the tech world with its first in-display fingerprint sensing technology showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 that was later seen inside the world’s first smartphone with an under display fingerprint sensor – Vivo X20 Plus UD. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, the company took this tech up another notch by announcing a concept phone named Apex. The Vivo Apex concept phone showed the world how fingerprint sensing technology can no longer rely on physical elements and be embedded under a display that offers a larger area to unlock the phone.
In addition, in a first, Vivo packed the front camera on the phone that retracts when needed, but remains hidden inside the phone most of the times. While Vivo said that this concept phone won’t see a launch anytime soon, or none for that matter, it has now sent out media invites in China that hint at an announcement on March 5 related to the Apex concept phone.
According to the media invites sent to Chinese media, spotted by Chinese blog ITHome, Vivo will organise an event on March 5 at Vivo Hangzhou Institute in China. The invite contains an image featuring the title ‘Unlock the future’ – which was used by Vivo at the time of showcasing the Apex concept phone at the ongoing mega-convention in Barcelona.
However, Vivo at the event said that Apex is just a concept phone and there are no plans to go ahead to bring this into the commercial production. The fact that a concept phone can go into production within a week’s time doesn’t sound quite workable. It is likely that there could be some announcement related to the Apex concept phone, not its launch.
The Vivo Apex concept phone showed off to the world earlier this week brings the fingerprint sensing technology ever seen embedded on a display to a new level. The phone has a larger area to place the finger to unlock it. Besides, the Apex concept phone has a selfie camera that remains inside the phone on the top and can be retracted only when needed.
However, the futuristic design of the camera comes with a tradeoff in the form of a delayed time to prepare the camera to take photos, 8 seconds to be specific. The phone also forgoes the earpiece speaker on the top to allow the bezel-less design on the phone. Vivo Apex concept phone emits vibrations that make the voice calls audible to the receiver.
