A four-storey building housing a nursing home in the suburbs of Mumbai collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least 9 people with more than 30 feared trapped. "Rescue work with the help of rescue gear is in process," said PS Rahangdale, chief fire officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade. "Removal of the topmost reinforced concrete slab is in progress, as is a search for trapped persons inside the cavity." Rahangdale added that the ground floor of the building in Ghatkopar housed a nursing home, which was vacant. He adds that the rest of the building was occupied by three or four families on each floor. Currently, 14 fire engines, two rescue vans and 8 ambulances were at the site. A police official at the site said 12 people had so far been rescued.
The four-storey building is at the LBS Road, near Shreyas Cinema in the western part of the area. Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap raised the issue in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. While Prakash Mehta, Maharashtra Housing Minister told ANI, “Hospital has confirmed that three people have died till now.” The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received a call at 10.43 a.m. and the fire trucks and disaster management teams rushed to the spot. -
Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, P Rahangdale told ANI, “The removal of topmost RCC slab and search of people trapped are in progress.” Rahangdale had earlier told the Indian Express that about 14 fire tenders and two rescue vans have reached the spot and operations to rescue more people are under way.

The cause of the collapse of the residential building is still unknown. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team moved to the building for rescue operations.
