Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has recently been adding many new features in order to keep its over one billion users on the app. In the latest feature, WhatsApp has allowed its users to backup data on Google’s cloud storage called the Google Drive. The messaging app from before has had the option of storing the backup in the users’ phone memory itself. This new move by WhatsApp serves two purposes: first, WhatsApp users can save a lot of internal memory on their smartphones as all the data will be stored in the cloud, secondly, users will not lose their messages, pictures, contacts and other histories even if they start using a new device. The cloud is also more reliable than a smartphone which can get destroyed or lost.
The only issue as of now seems to be the fact that you may not be able to use the data directly from the Google Drive. This is because users are only allowed to access the ‘hidden’ backup data only if they restore it on their phones. But interestingly, a few users have been able to see the folder for backup storage, available on the Drive when opened from PCs. In the smartphone version also it is now available under the ‘Trash’ option. This means the users have got is much easier now to manage the backup data. They can do it just by clicking the WhatsApp option in the dedicated folder.

Users also have the option of managing the content including delete, backup turnoff, restoring from WhatsApp. But the automated standby data can only be turned off from the settings option on your smartphone. This feature was first brought by the app last year in 2015, and users were required to connect the app accounts with their Gmail accounts in order for the backup process to work. WhatsApp backup data for iPhone and iPad users can already by stored on the iCloud. You also have the option of selecting when do you want to backup your data, or how regularly.
