Youtube has introduced “notes” for users to add context and information on Youtube videos. The new feature will be a crowdsourced feature and will provide a detailed explanation of any video.

The new notes feature will help you to explain whether a video is informative or if it’s a parody. Looking at the several online debates and controversies, this might help in reducing those.

Initially a limited number of eligible contributors will be invited via email or Creator Studio notification to write notes. This eventually will allow YouTube to test the feature and improve its systems before they consider expanding these notes.

The rise of deepfake videos have raised several concerns. Incidents such as creating ‘fake clips involving two top aides of Prime Minister Narendra Modi triggering police investigations,’ took a wrong turn during the elections. With the new notes feature, contributors can add to the details and aim of the videos.

To be an eligible commenter, you need to have an active YouTube channel and maintain all the YouTube Community guidelines. Initially, U.S viewers will start to see notes on videos in the coming weeks and months.

What’s next

“This work builds on a number of products we’ve launched to display helpful context alongside videos, such as information panels, or our recent disclosure requirement when content is altered or synthetic,” YouTube said.

To start with the pilot testing will be available on mobile in the U.S. and in English. According to YouTube’s official website, the new notes feature might not provide 100 percent correct results, but they aim to develop it further.

Furthermore, viewers, participants, and creators can provide them feedback on the quality of notes. Viewers will then be asked if they think the note is “helpful,” “somewhat helpful” or “unhelpful.” They’ll be asked why they think a note is helpful or unhelpful.
