WhatsApp is reportedly working to introduce a new AI feature that generates profile pictures, as part of its latest beta version 2.24.11.17. This feature seems to build on the app’s existing AI-generated stickers, pushing the capabilities of artificial intelligence further in enhancing user experience. WABetaInfo, a trusted source for WhatsApp updates, spotted this feature and provided a glimpse of its functionality through a screenshot.

The new tool is expected to be accessible either within the pencil/edit tab in the profile picture settings or through a dedicated tab, similar to the existing Avatars feature. This tool will allow users to describe the desired image, which the AI will then generate, much like the process for creating AI stickers.

While it remains unclear which specific AI model WhatsApp will employ for generating these images, it is likely to be the same one used for the Meta AI search bar. Currently, users can generate images via the search bar by describing the image in a chat with Meta AI, waiting for it to be generated, saving it, and then uploading it as a profile picture. The upcoming tool aims to streamline this process by integrating image generation directly into the profile picture settings, thereby eliminating unnecessary steps.

This development is part of a broader trend of incorporating AI into social media and messaging platforms to enhance user personalisation and engagement. By simplifying the process of creating custom profile pictures, WhatsApp is poised to offer users a more intuitive and efficient way to personalise their profiles.

The introduction of AI-generated profile pictures in WhatsApp’s beta version signifies the app’s continuous efforts to innovate and improve user experience. As the feature rolls out, it will be interesting to see how users adopt and utilise this new capability. Previously, WhatsApp added Meta AI to the app letting users have a free-flowing conversation with the chatbot based on the WhatsApp owner’s Llama model. It was initially launched in September last year followed by a WhatsApp integration in select markets like the US.
