In a major development affecting millions of Windows 10 users, Microsoft has revealed that it will officially discontinue support for the operating system on October 14, 2025. Despite this, the company has assured users that some essential updates will still be provided through 2028. As detailed in a recent Microsoft blog post, users running Windows 10 will continue to benefit from ongoing updates for Microsoft 365 apps, continued protection via Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and access to extended security updates even after the OS reaches its end-of-support date.

“With Windows 10 support coming to an end in October, we’re here to provide information and resources to help you choose the path that works best for you—whether that’s exploring the next generation of Windows, staying on your current PC with the Extended Security Program (ESU) or moving to a cloud-based solution,”
Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer said in a statement.

Windows 10 launched in July 2015, and after nearly a decade, support will end on Oct. 14, 2025.

Here’s what that means:

Microsoft is ending its support for Windows 10, which means the operating system will no longer receive security patches, new features, or official technical assistance. Although Windows 10 PCs will still operate, the lack of regular security updates increases their exposure to potential cyber risks, such as malware attacks and viruses.

For businesses and organizations, using outdated software like Windows 10 can create difficulties in maintaining compliance with industry regulations and security standards.

Additionally, software developers may begin phasing out support for applications on Windows 10, potentially leading to reduced performance or functionality for certain programs.

However, Microsoft 365 apps will continue to receive security updates on both personal and business Windows 10 devices until October 10, 2028. Feature updates will be available until August 2026. These updates, which aim to help users smoothly shift to Windows 11, will be delivered through the usual update mechanisms. It’s important to note that these updates will not include technical support.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus will continue receiving Security Intelligence Updates on Windows 10 until October 2028, helping maintain basic protection despite the end of broader OS support.

If you’re using Windows 10 today, checking if your PC can upgrade to Windows 11 is simple. Just click the Start button, then go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. You can also use the PC Health Check app to see if your device meets the Windows 11 system requirements, or check with your organization’s IT team for support.

“We understand that your PC holds what’s important to you, from years of valuable files to cherished photos, and the personal settings that make it yours. To help make your move to a Windows 11 PC as simple and secure as possible, we recommend using Windows Backup—built right into Windows 10. It’s an easy way to help you safely and securely transfer your data, personal files, and most settings and applications, so everything’s ready for you the moment you sign in,” Mehdi noted.
