WhatsApp is introducing a new feature on iOS that allows users to share photos and videos in their original quality as a document. This feature was initially tested with a small group of users in November and is now rolling out to all iOS users with the 23.24.73 update.

According to WaBetaInfo, the changelog mentions that users can easily send original quality media as a file, providing an alternative to the default compressed approaches used by the app.

WhatsApp has been testing a similar feature for Android users since at least September, hinting that a stable release for Android devices may be on the horizon.

How to use the feature

To use this feature, users can tap the “+” in the chat, select “Document,” and then choose “Photo or Video.” The sent files can be viewed by recipients within WhatsApp, but previews do not appear in the main chat interface. There is a 2GB limit on the size of files that can be sent using this feature.

WhatsApp is also working on another new feature that will let users share their WhatsApp status directly on Instagram. According to WaBetaInfo that spotted this feature on Android beta version (2.23.25.20, this new feature is optional and it gives users control over the content they want to share on Instagram.

WhatsApp may also soon bring the ability to search by username. It will allow users to search for other users by username making it easier to find and connect with even those you may not know by their phone number.
