Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas warns iPhone users against downloading Comet app: Here’s why

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, has issued a public warning to iPhone users, asking them not to download any app claiming to be Comet from the Apple App Store. According to Aravind Srinivas, the version of the Comet app currently listed is a fake app and has no connection with Perplexity. The announcement came after users spotted an app with a similar name attempting to pose as Comet, which is Perplexity’s AI-powered browser.

Srinivas clarified that the official iOS version of Comet is still in development and it has not been released.

Fake App Poses Security and Privacy Concern

The fake app, titled “Cornet AI”, has copied Comet’s branding and even falsely claims to be powered by Perplexity. Aravind Srinivas responded strongly, stating on social media that the app is “fake and spam” and urged users to avoid downloading it.

This situation raises significant concerns about user safety. Fake apps like this can pose serious risks, including data theft, privacy breaches, and malware. Aravind Srinivas recommends that anyone who may have already downloaded the suspicious app should delete it immediately and check for any unusual activity on their device.

Comet iOS App Is Coming Soon?

Perplexity has already launched Comet on Android, from where it has received a positive response for its AI-enhanced features like real-time search, contextual answers, and transparent sourcing. The iOS version is also expected to offer similar capabilities but is not yet available, according to the CEO.

Srinivas promised that users would be notified via official channels once the legitimate iOS app is ready for pre-registration or download. Until then, he emphasized that no Comet-branded app on the App Store should be trusted.

Due to the growing popularity of AI-driven apps, copy and impersonating applications are also becoming more common. Therefore users are advised to verify app developers, avoid third-party links, and follow only trusted sources for updates.

As iOS users wait for Comet’s iOS debut, Perplexity’s warning comes as a timely reminder to stay cautious in an increasingly crowded and competitive app marketplace.
