Meta’s smart glasses, created in collaboration with Ray-Ban, are becoming popular thanks to their sleek design and unique AI tools. These tools are getting an upgrade to turn them into wearable tourist guides.
In a post on Threads, Meta’s Twitter-like platform, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth showed off a new Look and Ask feature that can identify landmarks and tell facts related to them. The CTO showed it using examples from San Francisco such as the Coit Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Painted Ladies.
The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses use their built-in camera to scan the scene in front and cross-reference the image with info in the Meta AI’s knowledge database.
Bosworth said that other improvements are being rolled out, including new voice commands so that a user can share his/her latest Meta AI interaction on WhatsApp and Messenger.
In the future, Bosworth said users will also be able to adjust the speed of Meta AI readouts in the voice settings menu to have them go faster or slower.
However, this unique landmark recognition feature is still only in beta.
Meta has opened up its waitlist to join the beta so more people can try these experimental features. All you have to do is – go to the official page, input your glasses serial number, and wait to get contacted by the company. However, this option is only available if you are based in the USA.
Bosworth said that the team is working to “make this available to more people”. However, neither he nor Meta has given a clear timeline of when the impressive AI features will be more widely available.
