Indian iPhone users are facing a new security threat, according to a major warning issued by Cyber Dost, the cybersecurity initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs. This “transnational scam” attempts to hack devices and steal money from bank accounts, shattering the perception of iPhones being immune to such attacks.
How does the scam work?
The scam operates through deceptive SMS messages mimicking official communication from India Post. These messages claim a parcel delivery attempt failed due to “incomplete address information.” They create a sense of urgency by demanding users update their contact details within 48 hours to avoid the package being returned.
The critical danger lies in the embedded link within the message. Clicking on this link directs users to a cleverly designed phishing website. These fake websites appear legitimate, mimicking real delivery service portals, but their true purpose is to steal sensitive information like passwords, credit card details, and even personal identification documents.
Here’s how to protect yourself from falling victim to this scam:
Be wary of any message claiming delivery issues, even if it appears official.
Clicking links within these messages is highly discouraged, as they can lead to phishing websites.
If concerned about a package, contact India Post directly using their official phone number or website. There you can verify delivery status and update your address if necessary.
Never share personal information, including passwords, credit card details, or identification documents, through SMS or unverified websites.
If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from India Post, report it directly to the department. Additionally, consider reporting the incident to the authorities to help curb the spread of this scam.
