iPhone 16 Pro launch: Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 16 lineup is set to make its debut on September 9 at the “It’s Glowtime” event. If the ongoing rumours and leaks are to be believed then Apple is planning to incorporate some significant changes in iPhone 16. The new series is poised to bring several significant updates, particularly to the Pro models.
The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to be a major upgrade over its predecessor, featuring a larger display, improved camera capabilities, a powerful A18 Bionic chip, and longer battery life. Other rumoured features include a periscope lens with upto 6x optical zoom, USB-C connectivity, and new colour options. Here’s a detailed look at what we can expect from the iPhone 16, including its design changes, new features, and technical specifications.
Design and display
For the iPhone 16, Apple is introducing notable changes primarily in the Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro will increase to a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will expand to 6.9 inches, marking the first size upgrade in several years. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
The design of the standard iPhone 16 models will feature a new vertical camera lens arrangement, deviating from the previous diagonal setup. With this shift, you can expect a slimmer camera bump this time. It will also facilitate new capabilities like capturing Spatial Video for the Vision Pro headset. The iPhone 16 Pro models will continue with the square camera bump, but with improved internals.
Buttons and new features
A significant update across all iPhone 16 models is the addition of the Action Button, previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro. This new button replaces the traditional mute switch and offers various functionalities such as activating the Flashlight, launching the Camera, and more.
Additionally, Apple will introduce a new “Capture Button” on the iPhone 16 lineup. Positioned on the right side of the device, this button will work similarly to a digital camera’s shutter button, providing multiple pressure levels for focusing and capturing images or videos.
Camera enhancements
The iPhone 16 will feature a redesigned vertical camera lens arrangement with a pill-shaped bump housing the Wide and Ultrawide lenses. This change will support improved low-light performance and macro mode capabilities. The iPhone 16 Pro models will also receive a significant camera upgrade, including a Tetraprism 5x optical zoom lens and a new 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera for enhanced imaging capabilities.
Performance and chips
The iPhone 16 series will debut with the next-generation A18 chip, built on the N3E 3-nanometer node. While both the standard and Pro models will use A18 chips, the Pro models may feature a more advanced variant with enhanced GPU and Neural Engine capabilities. Improved thermal management with a graphene thermal system and potential battery innovations are also expected.
Connectivity and charging
The iPhone 16 Pro models are rumoured to incorporate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem, offering faster and more efficient 5G connectivity. In addition, Wi-Fi 7 could be featured in the Pro models for higher speeds and improved performance. The standard iPhone 16 models may use Wi-Fi 6E. Apple will continue with USB-C with the iPhone 16 lineup, a transition seen recently on iPhone 15 models.
Battery and power
Battery life improvements are anticipated, particularly for the Pro models, which may include stacked battery technology for increased capacity and longevity. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to support 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging, a step up from previous models.
Colour options
The iPhone 16 lineup will likely be available in several colours, including black, green, pink, blue, and white, with a frosted back glass that contrasts with the frame colour. MagSafe alignment magnets are expected to be slimmer, reducing the size of the magnetic ring.
Launch date
The iPhone 16 will be officially unveiled at Apple’s event on September 9, with an expected launch date of September 20.
