Instagram is rolling out several new updates, including a feature that allows users to share their live location. As reported by The Verge, this new feature will be available within Instagram Direct Messages (DMs). Let’s take a closer look at what this update brings.
Live Location Sharing
Ever got lost trying to meet a friend made on Instagram? With the new update, that won’t be a problem anymore. Instagram is adding the ability to share your live location with friends in your DMs. You can share your location for up to one hour at a time, making it easier to find each other when meeting at outings, concerts, or other events.
The location-sharing feature will work in both personal and group chats. You can turn it on or off depending on your preferences. It’s similar to the SnapMap feature in Snapchat, allowing users to share their whereabouts. However, the location-sharing feature is currently only available in selected countries, with Instagram yet to publicly reveal which countries have access.
Other New Updates
Instagram has also introduced a few more features:
- Nicknames: You can now give yourself and your friends nicknames in DMs. This applies to both personal and group chats. If you don’t like a nickname someone gave you, you can hide it or even prevent them from renaming you. However, this feature is only available in one-on-one chats, not in group chats.
- New Stickers: Instagram has added 17 new sticker packs, featuring over 300 stickers. You can use them in DMs and save your favorites for easy access.
AI-Generated Profile Picture
In another exciting development, Instagram might be testing a new AI feature that can create customized profile pictures. This feature, which was leaked by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, allows users to create personalized profile pictures using AI. Although it’s currently available on Threads, Instagram plans to roll it out to its wider user base soon.
