Google’s policies prohibit content it considers harmful to users or disruptive to the overall advertising experience.

Google is making big changes to its Chrome web browser. The search engine giant is rolling out a new system called Manifest V3, which aims to improve how browser extensions work. Extensions are small add-ons that people use to customise their browsing, like blocking annoying ads or adding extra tools. Google says this change will make Chrome safer and better at protecting user privacy. But there’s a catch, it’s breaking some popular extensions, including the original uBlock Origin ad blocker.

uBlock Origin is loved by many because it stops ads from popping up on websites. However, the new Manifest V3 system removes a feature that uBlock Origin and similar extensions need to do their job. As Chrome switches to this new setup, it’s turning off these older extensions for more and more users. People are seeing a message on their computers which pops up under the extensions tab. It says the add-on is “no longer supported” and has been switched off. Users then get two choices: delete the extension right away or go to a settings page to manage it.

This news isn’t sitting well with everyone. On websites like Reddit and X, people are sharing their frustration. They’re upset because they relied on these tools to make browsing smoother and less cluttered with ads. Some are even thinking about switching browsers. Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, isn’t following Google’s lead. Firefox is keeping support for these older extensions, so tools like uBlock Origin still work there.

Google has been warning users about this change for a while, but it’s hitting more people now. The company says the new system is worth it for better security, even if it means losing some features. For those who want to keep using uBlock Origin, there’s a lighter version called uBlock Origin Lite that works with Manifest V3.
