A Google Maps survey team, working on behalf of the tech giant, was allegedly attacked by villagers in the Birhar village of Kanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. The incident, which was found to be a result of a massive misunderstanding, saw the team being thrashed on suspicion of being thieves.
The survey team, which was outsourced from Tech Mahindra, was in the village to map the streets for Google Maps. The vehicle they were using was equipped with cameras. However, this drew the suspicion of the locals. The villagers, who had recently experienced a series of thefts in the area, mistook the camera-fitted car for a vehicle used by criminals and its occupants as thieves.

The situation then escalated quickly as a group of villagers surrounded the vehicle, blocking its path, and proceeded to physically assault the survey team. The police were immediately called to the scene. They intervened and took both the villagers and the Google Maps team to the local police station to sort out the situation.
At the station, the survey team was able to explain the purpose of their visit, presenting their permits from the Director General of Police (DGP) for the survey. The misunderstanding was then cleared up, and the police reported that the situation was pacified without any further law and order issues. The Google Maps team decided not to file a formal complaint against the villagers.
Google adding new features to Maps
On a side note, Google Maps has been rolling out new features aimed at enhancing the user experience, particularly in India. One key feature is AI-powered narrow road avoidance, which uses satellite imagery and other data to help drivers of four-wheelers avoid overly narrow streets. This is useful in densely populated cities. Additionally, Google Maps has been updated to highlight flyovers along recommended routes, a feature that helps drivers better prepare for elevated roadways in over 40 Indian cities.
Globally, a new feature called ‘Immersive View’ allows users to preview every step of their journey, including what landmarks, traffic, and even weather will look like along the way. Furthermore, the company has made significant advancements in its 3D mapping technology, providing more realistic and detailed building representations.
