Android 16 update: Google’s upcoming feature will Prevent stolen smartphones from being used

Google has released the first preview of Android 16, much earlier than usual. This version is mainly for developers, but anyone who wants to test the new features can install it. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide on how to install the Android 16 Developer Preview on your compatible Pixel device.

The Android 16 Developer Preview is available for the following Pixel devices- Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet and Pixel 9 series. If you don’t have one of these devices, you won’t be able to install the preview.

Should you install the Developer Preview?

Although it’s tempting to try the latest Android features, keep in mind that the Developer Preview is still in testing. This means it can be unstable and buggy. It’s mainly intended for developers to test their apps, not for daily use. If you have a spare Pixel device and are okay with potential issues, feel free to install it. Otherwise, it’s better to wait for the more stable Beta release in early 2025.

Here’s how to install Android 16 on your Pixel device

Here’s how you can manually install Android 16 Developer Preview on your Pixel. It involves downloading the update, unlocking the bootloader, and using Recovery mode.

Step 1: Prepare your device

Before installing the preview, make sure to back up your data since the process will reset your device. You’ll need to unlock your bootloader, which will erase everything on your phone.

To unlock the bootloader, go to Settings > About Phone and tap Build number multiple times to unlock Developer Options. Then, enable OEM unlocking in Developer Options.

Step 2: Download the update

You can either use the Factory Image (which wipes your device) or the OTA file (which installs without wiping your data). Choose the correct file for your Pixel model from Google’s official site.

Step 3: Boot into Recovery mode

Now, turn off your Pixel phone. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons together until you see the bootloader screen. Next, use the volume buttons to scroll and select Recovery Mode.

Step 4: Connect to your computer

Next, you’ll need to connect your phone to a computer with ADB tools installed. If you don’t have ADB installed, you can download it from the Android Developer website. For Windows users, the Universal ADB Driver is a helpful tool.

Step 5: Sideload the update

Once your phone is in Recovery Mode and connected to the computer, open a command window. On your computer, type:

  • adb sideload [filename].zip (replace [filename] with the name of the OTA file you downloaded).

This will start the installation process. You’ll see progress on both the computer and the phone.

Step 6: Reboot the device

After the update is installed, select Reboot now from the Recovery Mode menu. Your Pixel will reboot with Android 16.
