Google has rolled out its AI-driven search tool, AI Mode, to all users in India. Following a limited trial phase with select participants, the company has now expanded access nationwide—no registration needed. According to a blog post from the tech giant, the feature has been met with encouraging feedback since its initial launch in English.
Hema Budaraju, Google’s Vice President of Product Management for Search, noted that users in India demonstrated a strong interest in asking more intricate and layered questions during the Labs testing phase.
AI Mode allows users to explore in-depth queries across various subjects and intricate ideas. It offers the flexibility to search using either voice or text, and even lets you upload images via Lens for comprehensive insights. The tool also remembers the flow of previous conversations, enabling more natural follow-ups.
Google has announced that its AI Mode in Search is now progressively reaching users across India. In the days ahead, people will start noticing a new “AI Mode” option appearing in both their search results and within the Google app’s search bar. This public rollout includes all the tools and capabilities that were part of the earlier Labs preview. At present, however, the AI Mode experience is available only in English.
How It Functions
AI Mode is powered by a specialized version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 language model. Whether you type, speak, or upload an image through Google Lens, the feature processes your input and taps into live data sources like Google’s Knowledge Graph and Shopping Graph to craft relevant answers. It’s designed to tackle multi-layered, detailed questions by keeping track of previous inputs.
For instance, you might ask for ways to keep hyperactive kids busy indoors during a heatwave, and then clarify that you lack toys or space. AI Mode will remember that context and tailor its suggestions to fit your situation.
Activating Google AI Mode in Search
On desktop, the AI Mode option appears right beneath the search bar on the results page, next to tabs such as “All,” “Images,” and “News.” To get started, simply navigate to the Search Labs section and switch on the “AI Mode” toggle. Once enabled, the new functionality becomes instantly available for use.
