Google’s Gemini AI chatbot has seized the top spot on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in India and the US, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In the top ranking apps category, the Google Gemini app was marked as the top app to try on both Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Prior to this, it was OpenAI’s ChatGPT app that had dominated the Apple App Store in the US following the release of the GPT-5 model.

Nano Banana trend puts Google Gemini on top

Based on the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, the Nano Banana tool encourages people to generate images and alter existing images using text-based prompts. Since its launch last month, Google says that the Nano Banana tool has been used to edit over 500 million images, which directly led to a massive influx of new users to the Gemini app. This is despite the app coming pre-installed on modern Android smartphones.

According to reports, the app gained over 23 million new users in the two weeks between August 26 and September 9 alone, thus highlighting the Nano Banana’s virality. Prior to this, it was OpenAI’s ChatGPT that became the center of attention with its GPT-5 model release and the viral Ghibli-style images.

Nano Banana’s virality began with the 3D figurine images and was soon followed by retro saree selfies, photos with celebrities and even pre-wedding photoshoots – all using cleverly crafted AI prompts.
