Garmin’s newly launched Forerunner 165 is a near clone of the 265S but for Rs 17,000 less. That’s it, that’s its key USP. The only things you’re really missing are dual-frequency GPS and some sports profiles. Else, it’s the same “runner centric” smartwatch as the Garmin Forerunner 265S we reviewed last year.
Garmin Forerunner 165 — Specs lowdown
One of the standout features of the Forerunner 165—like the 265S—is its AMOLED display. Unlike most Garmin watches, which use memory-in-pixel (MIP) displays for superior outdoor visibility and extended battery life, the AMOLED screen offers a vibrant, modern look. The benefits include more fluid interactions, lifelike animations, and the option for an always-on display, in addition to enabling touch capabilities.
The Forerunner 165 is packed with features such as blood oxygen saturation monitor, altimetre and “next-generation ambient light sensors.” For fitness enthusiasts, the Forerunner 165 provides advanced metrics like V02 max and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). While it suits beginners, its full potential is unlocked when used by those familiar with advanced training concepts like tempo and interval training, or negative splits for race strategy. With its comprehensive training modules and tracking capabilities, the 165 is designed for professional runners and athletes.
Although it may not match the “smart” functionalities of an Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Forerunner 165’s platform-agnostic nature ensures compatibility with both Android and iPhone. Users can receive notifications, set timers, and store offline music from Spotify and Amazon Music on its 4GB internal storage.
The Forerunner 165 features a 1.2-inch display within a 43mm dial and uses 20mm quick-release silicone bands. It boasts a battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS mode, Garmin claims.
