Apple’s Lamp-Like Robot in the Works

According to a blog post on Apple’s Machine Learning website, the company is working on a lamp-like robot that features more human-like movements. The research paper, created by Apple’s research team, emphasizes the significance of nonverbal cues like posture and gestures in human interaction. It highlights the need for robots to display expressive movements to communicate effectively with humans. The report shares a prototype of a lamp-like robot designed for multitasking, blending functional and expressive qualities in its movements.

A video demonstrates two robotic desk lamps—one labeled “Expressive” and the other “Functional.” Both have articulating arms, cameras, speakers, LED lights, and projectors, and both are seen responding to gestures and voice commands most likely given via Siri.

The Expressive version appears more engaging, with a personality of its own. It dances to music, glances outside to check the weather when asked, adjusts the lighting dynamically, and even shows sadness when its requests are denied. In contrast, the Functional version remains still until given a command.

Apple’s research suggests that expressive robots increase user engagement and functionality. This aligns with reports that the company is working on home devices like smart displays and robotic assistants. However, it’s important to note that this is still a prototype, meaning it’s in the early stages of development with no confirmed release timeline.
