Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is gearing upto bring a new feature for the newly launched Aadhaar app that will enable users to update their mobile numbers directly using the app. This feature has been demanded by users for a long time now and it looks like this functionality will very soon be offered to Aadhaar card holders. Importantly this feature will eliminate the need to visit an enrollment center for updating the mobile number linked to Aadhaar card.

In a post on ‘X’ the Aadhaar regulatory body UIDAI announced that mobile number updates will soon be possible from home using secure digital verification. The upcoming feature will be using a combination of OTP verification and face authentication through the Aadhaar app to confirm a user’s identity.
“Coming Soon! Update mobile number in Aadhaar from the comfort of your home through OTP & Face Authentication,” UIDAI wrote in its official post on X (formerly Twitter).

In the current system individuals wanting to update their mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar cards have to follow a tedious process of visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendras due to the sensitivity of the verifiction process. However, this process is very time consuming and inconvenient for senoir citizens and individuals with disabilities and residents living in remote areas.

With this new feature, UIDAI aims to ease those challenges by shifting the entire process to the user’s smartphone, making a crucial identity update far more accessible.

How the feature will work?

According to UIDAI, the system will authenticate users through an OTP sent to their existing or new mobile number, followed by a face authentication step using the Aadhaar app’s built-in verification tools. This two-step process is intended to maintain a high level of security while offering a smooth and user-friendly experience. UIDAI also emphasised that this upgrade removes the need for physical documentation or centre visits, highlighting in its X post: “No more standing in the queue at the Aadhaar Centre.”
